Can I use unstructured data as an input to Robotic Process Automation (RPA)?

I’ve been working on RPA for some large-scale use-cases, and there is one common question that pops up during our on-boarding or architecture meetings:

Can I feed unstructured data to a RPA mechanism?

While technically you can, it is not necessarily the best way to automate something in your organization.

To make things simpler for you, let me take the example of a manufacturing company who is using RPA to automate their invoices.

Providing unstructured data to a standalone RPA system will not be efficient, since the bots will not be able to understand and extract details of the invoice like the item code, or VAT details.

While the time and effort required to build a system that would streamline and structure this unstructured data and then use that structured data as an input for the RPA is feasible, it is advisable to do this data cleansing before you start using the data or RPA.
