Should I use Firebase or self-hosted server for a social networking app

A friend of mine is trying to create a mobile application which turned out to be a social network like Tinder. Though he is a developer himself, he would like to arrive at a proper backend tech for the application.

The battle is between Firebase and self-hosted solution that can run on AWS or GCP. Which one do you think he should go with?

This a more common question among the developers and the startups. Firebase is a good solution if you’re building a more realtime applications like messenger, multiplayer games, and score boards.
But an application like a social network can always use traditional mySQL and standalone database as the developer has more control over the data when they are looking for doing some analytics and processing over the data.

So think they can use the self hosted approach for this scenario.
