What's the one skill a designer must master?

A designer should carry a lot of skills to product the best design possible. I’m not talking about skills like using Sketch, Photoshop or Illustrator. I’m talking about skills like gathering requirements, understanding the platform for which you are designing and such.

From my experience, one of the most important skill a designer should have is:

Listening

For me, this skill pushes away everything below the stack, and comes out as the first priority. Are there any other skills that we should have?

I would say, Empathy, is one of the most important skills a designer should have. This is a skill that has to be acquired as a designer progress in his/her career as it can only be learned from experience.

And, empathy should not only be applied to the user needs but also to the business/client needs as well. This will help satisfy both the users and the client.

That’s a really nice skill to have as a designer. I remember reading about Empathy on Interaction Design’s site. Here’s the link. Thought it might help people drive deep into this skill:

Patience is key!

Patience in listening!
Patience in breaking down the project!
Patience in considering every small detail!
Patience in taking feedback!
Patience in iteration!
